Multicolor Photometry of the Vela Pulsar ⋆

چکیده
Multicolor photometry of the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833−45), updated by recent HST/WFPC2 observations obtained in the 555W , 675W and 814W filters, is presented. The available data provide the best characterization so far of the pulsar spectral shape, which is dominated by a flat power law continuum with spectral index α = −0.2± 0.2, consistent with the extrapolation in the optical domain of the power law component of the X-ray spectrum detected by Chandra. In addition, a marginally significant dip(≈ 3σ) seems to be present at about 6500Å. Spectroscopic observations with the VLT, now in progress, will undoubtly provide a much better assessment of the reality and characteristics of this feature.

Photometry and proper motion of the Vela pulsar ?
We present the first UBVR photometry of the Vela Pulsar. All observed colours lie significantly above any Rayleigh-Jeans extrapolation of the ROSAT soft X-ray black body curve. While the U, B and V fluxes can be described by a flat power law, the R point lies about 1 magnitude below the expectation. An evidence for a similar spectral turnover, but at longer wavelength, was also claimed for the ...

HST observations have contributed significantly to our knowledge on the behaviour of Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) as optical emitters. First, HST has been instrumental both to discover new optical counterparts (PSR B1055-52, PSR B1929+10, PSR B0950+08) and to confirm proposed identifications (PSR B0656+14). Second, HST multicolor photometry provided useful information to characterize the optic...

متن کاملG.F.: The distance to the Vela pulsar gauged with HST parallax Observations
The distance to the Vela pulsar gauged with HST parallax observations. ABSTRACT The distance to the Vela pulsar (PSR B0833−45) has been traditionally assumed to be 500 pc. Although affected by a significant uncertainty, this value stuck to both the pulsar and the SNR. In an effort to obtain a model free distance measurement, we have applied high resolution astrometry to the pulsar V ∼ 23.6 opti...
متن کاملTwo decades of pulsar timing of Vela
Pulsar timing at the Mt Pleasant observatory has focused on Vela, which can be tracked for 18 hours of the day. These nearly continuous timing records extend over 24 years allowing a greater insight into details of timing noise, micro glitches and other more exotic effects. In particular we report the glitch parameters of the 2004 event, along with the reconfirmation that the spin up for the Ve...
